Born in the periphery of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, Costa Jpeg’s artistic genesis didn’t start with a high-end setup; it started as a raw protocol for survival. For a kid navigating a low-income reality, art was the ultimate equalizer. Ordinary school notebooks were quickly converted into his first offline ledgers, filled with poetry, sketches, and music. Long before minting on-chain, music was his primary frequency. Operating as a rock guitarist and a reclusive songwriter, he studied music production and collaborated with local artists. Yet, he kept his most personal creations heavily guarded, choosing to hold his art rather than broadcast it to an analog world that wouldn’t decode its value.
But something was missing from the traditional system. Seeking a reboot of his creative soul, Costa returned to his foundational layer: drawing. It was a reconnection with his purest state of expression. Having already analyzed early decentralized networks during his time as a technology journalist, the pivot to digital art wasn’t just an experiment—it was the logical next step.
In 2021, he officially deployed his vision to the blockchain. Merging digital illustration with abstract forms, glitch art, and collage, his visual language became a raw reflection of the digital age. Costa deconstructs traditional aesthetics to build something entirely new. He isn’t just a creator of JPEGs; he is a builder in the space, having engineered web-based distortion tools to push the boundaries of pixel manipulation.
His induction into the crypto art ecosystem was permanently verified when his artifact “PEPEISDEAD” was accepted into the legendary Fake Rares directory (Series 4), sharing historical blockspace with the early OGs of the movement. This momentum compounded as he became a curated artist for Notable Pepes and was handpicked by OpenSea as an emerging artist for their official Get Based campaign, bringing his vision to the forefront of the Layer 2 scaling revolution.
Costa always strives to present his vision of the world and people in his works. His pieces reflect the restlessness of a social analyst who expresses insightful critiques full of references to memes and internet culture.
Beyond the digital canvas, Costa remains an active voice and presence in the global Web3 ecosystem, bridging his origins in Rio with exhibitions and decentralized art discussions worldwide.
